Access to the Tawharanui peninsula is off the Omaha road just north of Matakana and follow the peninsula road to the end, Jones Bay is the first carpark at the bottom the hill, you can either walk along the beach to Maori Bay when the tide is out or follow the track from the carpark up the side of the hill and onto the farmland and start the walk anti clock wise.
Anchor Bay is the second access to the peninsula, follow the road to the end, when you arrive you are presented with a pristine bay an ideal place for a family picnic. The walk here starts right from the carpark on the gravel road, there are several different routes you can take but the best one is along the coast line, as this track will take you right out to the end of the peninsula.
The gravel road ends around twenty minutes into the walk and you are on farmland, as you rise up the hillside you get stunning views down over Anchor Bay and to Omaha Beach further north, you will eventually arrive at the turnaround point to head down the southern side of the peninsula.
From the turnaround on your left is the track out to the lookout at the very end of the peninsula, a walk of around thirty minutes you are greeted with stunning views of the entire Hauraki Gulf, from the Coromandal Peninsula, Great Barrier Island, Little Barrier Island, Kawau Island and north right through to the Hen & Chicken Islands at Whangarei.
On the return walk from the lookout there are two more tracks worth a look, both are on the same track just up from the lookout one takes you out to the Marine Reserve marker on the northern point, here you get a fantastic view north to Leigh Harbour and Ti Point just north of Omaha Beach.
The Tokatu Loop track to the left takes you on a loop walk through bush and joins the lookout track just before you enter the farmland again, there is also a ecological trail through some great native bush, from the junction you can head down the southern side or return back to Anchor Bay, to walk all the tracks from Anchor Bay to Jones Bay would take around three hours, the walk is easy with only moderate inclines.
